Where did Secret Santa come from?

Secret Santa is a tradition that hasn’t been around for that long, but despite this, it’s surprisingly difficult to pin down its history. Some say that it was started by American philanthropist Larry Dean Stewart, who kickstarted the idea by giving people anonymous gifts during the Christmas season. He did this for over 25 years, and his identity wasn’t revealed until 2006. He also trained more Secret Santas to carry on his charitable practice in the city of Kansas, giving around $65,000 to needy people. What a star.

But…that might not be correct. Other sources say that Secret Santa comes from Scandinavia, where people left unidentified presents outside people’s houses. This became known as Julklapp.
