Father’s Day, much like the mothering equivalent, kicked off in the US back in the early
1900s. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd saw that Mother’s Day celebrations were on the up and
up, and figured her dad deserved a shout-out. The man had single-handedly raised six kids
after their mum died – and given they were all boys with the exception of Sonora, he
definitely had his work cut out for him.
She had a chat with her church, and eventually the Spokane Ministerial Alliance agreed
that on the third Sunday in June, they’d dedicate their sermons to dads everywhere.
So, Sonora reached out to the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and, in 1910, they started
doing Father’s Day sermons on the third Sunday in June.
Father’s Day didn’t have quite the rise that Mother’s Day did. Turns out that in the
olden days, men weren’t really supposed to show their feelings and some people didn’t
think that dads needed a day to be appreciated out loud. Man stoic. Man provide. Man no
need funny gifts and thank yous. Luckily, that faded over the years, and eventually, in
Australia, we now celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September.
The best part (other than being able to show your dad a bit of love, obviously) is that
the day falls slap bang in the middle of Mother’s Day and Christmas, so you’ve got time
to save for all three. You’ve got no excuse!
